Under unfavorable combustion conditions, such as incorrect burner settings or the burning of excessively moist solid fuels, especially wood, oily, tarry, and even graphite-like deposits can form. These deposits are extremely difficult to remove mechanically. Similarly resistant deposits also form in smokehouses as so-called smoke tar, from grease vapors and thermal byproducts.
