Structure and functionality
A stratified storage tank is a device that stores heat. As a heat storage component, it is a heating technology component that significantly increases the efficiency of a heating system. It stores excess heat and feeds it back into the heating system. This maximizes heat utilization and reduces losses compared to a heating system without a stratified storage tank.
Thanks to a heat exchanger, for example, the upper, hot layer of stored water can be used for bathing or showering, and the only moderately warm middle layer can be used to keep the heating at the minimum room temperature at night.
The stratified storage tank uses the stored heat energy even more effectively than a standard combination or buffer storage tank and can therefore be designed smaller than the two aforementioned storage types.
If a solar thermal system is part of the heating system, a stratified storage tank is absolutely necessary for its integration. Water serves as the storage medium in the stratified storage tank. This is why the stratified storage tank is also called a hot water tank.
